Planting & Care

Outdoor Planting Instructions: Your Tivoli Hydrangea will grow best in moist, well-drained soil. There s no need to amend your soil when planting. Don t plant your flowers near any other trees root system. The key to successfully growing your Tivoli is planting it in a spot that receives the right amount of shade for your area. If you live in a colder area, plant your Tivoli Hydrangea near a South or West facing building wall. The sun will reflect off of the wall and heat your plant during colder months. If you live in a warmer area, plant in a spot that will get at least 50% shade. For the hottest areas of zone 9 and even some parts of zone 8, plant in an area that only gets morning light and receives filtered shade for the rest of the day. When planting, be sure to plant the shrub only as deep as it was in the container. Water immediately after planting and place a thick layer of mulch around the base.

Container Planting Instructions: Plant with high-quality potting soil. Make sure your container has drainage holes. Keep the soil at the same level it was at when it arrived. Once planted, firm the soil to eliminate air pockets around the roots. Keep your Tivoli in an area that receives plenty of morning sun and afternoon shade. If you live in a very cold area, bring your plant inside during the coldest freezes. Place it near a South or West facing window. When bringing your Tivoli back outside after the winter, gradually increase the amount of sun the plant receives.

Watering: Water your Hydrangea weekly for the first 6 months. After this time, you will only need to water your plant when you get less than 1 of rain during the week. The mulch should keep the soil moist. Never let your soil dry out completely. It s better to underwater than overwater your Tivoli. If you live in a hot or dry area, keep your soil evenly moist during the hottest months. If you live in a cold area, keep it well-watered in Autumn.

Fertilization: You can fertilize the plant every spring with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Fertilizing too much will cause the tree to produce more leaves and less blooms, so be careful to only add a little bit each year.

Pruning: Prune only in late autumn or early winter as the flowers begin to fade and dry. Since the Tivoli blooms from old wood, you will inhibit the growth if you prune before then. Remove 1 3 of the oldest stems with each pruning.
